Azul
y Blue
Azul
y Blue is a
collaboration I did with Janette Brossard, a Cuban artist living in Havana.
The two-person exhibition consists of interrelated installations: Oferta,
Azul, Freedom Water, and Lost & Found. It was
shown at the Centro Desarollo de Artes Visuales in Old Havana in July 2004.
Oferta was also shown in 2004 at the Brickbottom Gallery in Massachusetts.
Using
water as a metaphor, our work addresses issues of contemporary society: consumerism,
waste, recycling, abundance and scarcity, among other things. We see issues
facing the United States and Cuba both as parallel and contrasting. Water
is a central obsession in Cuba, an island surrounded and isola ted by salt
water, which has a stifling hot climate and an economy of scarcity. Safe
drinkable water is also, clearly, an obsession in the United States and much
of the First World.
Our
inter-cultural dialogue was carried on through email correspondence and images
that have been sent back and forth for discussion, comment and revision.
Our collaboration has been made possible because the Internet transcends
borders
